What are the top apps for small business owners right now?

Patrice Appleton • Oct 23, 2018

Running a small business is no mean feat. From manning the sales line and dealing with marketing budgets to handling customers, running a team and doing the admin, it can seem like your days are too short and to do lists too long. Luckily, there are hundreds if not thousands of apps designed specifically for small business owners to help you lighten the load. So, which are the best ones to try right now?

QuickBooks

Is there anything more stressful about running a business than dealing with billing, invoices, payroll and tax? QuickBooks won’t do the whole job for you but it is a very handy app to have loaded onto your smartphone. In fact, it’s regularly called one of the best apps for a small business out there. An accounting, billing and payment tool, this app means you can keep on top of the paperwork on the go. Alternative apps include FreshBooks and Xero,

Basecamp

Every small business owner needs a project management tool they can call upon to make it easier to meet deadlines, keep track of to dos and keep client projects on schedule. Basecamp allows you to do just that – you can assign jobs to others, upload and store files, hold conversations and see what still needs to be done to get a project over the finish line. What’s more you can set up multiple Basecamps for different projects and have a client and team side access for internal and external communications.

Slack

Slack is a handy team messaging app, so even if your team works remotely or you’re often in different locations, you can all collaborate with ease on the go. Other options include WhatsApp or Messenger.

Burner

If you don’t want to have two phones hanging around, one for work and one for your personal life, Burner is the solution. This clever app gives you an on demand phone number without needing another phone, meaning you can switch off after 5.30pm if needed and won’t need to give your private number to clients or suppliers.

Skype

What would a list of business apps be without the indispensable Skype? From cheap calls (free to other Skye usernames), low cost international calls and messaging to video chat and screen shares, this is an easy communications tool – and best of all, most of the people you want to connect with probably have it too. As well as all of those features, you can also buy incoming phone numbers with Skype for as short as three months – handy if you want to have a US number while working in the UK for example.

Go To Meeting

Go To Meeting is a handy virtual meeting app – so you can schedule, chair and join meetings online, without the expense of hiring a meeting room or the inconvenience of travelling.
