Wellbeing and apps: the biggest gap in the market for app development

Patrice Appleton • Aug 14, 2018

With a higher awareness of the importance of mental wellbeing, many of us are increasingly taking our mental health into our own hands and seeking out apps which promote self-care and daily balance. If your business operates in the health and wellness space or a related industry such as employment or business, there could be an opportunity to tap into the wellbeing app trend to raise your own brand profile.

What are big companies doing?

Many large companies like Facebook and Google are beginning to release features centred around wellbeing. One recent example is a usage monitor, which reminds Facebook fans to stop browsing when they’ve used the app for too long. Google’s Android 9 Pie operating system also includes features that are designed to beat the rising smartphone addiction epidemic and encourage users to find a better balance of screen and screen free time.

With more of these big companies highlighting the adverse effect of technology on our mental health, and, in contrast, the positive impact that self-care has on our health and productivity, it’s little surprise that wellbeing is growing as a movement. For your business, this could signal a chance to help your users and customers make positive changes via a useful own brand app.

Why is positive mental health good for working environments?

We are discovering more and more that happy workers are more productive workers. We’re currently in the early days of web app developers creating apps which look after our mental health, yet this is something that Human Resources departments could do with adopting.

With more companies than ever looking to do more to promote wellness within their workforce, it could be time to also dip your toe in the water. Whether you’re a large business considering an internal app as part of your staff care or a company in a wellness industry with advice and insight to offer, developing a wellness app could well be a smart move. Figures were released recently that point to German workplaces out-performing UK workplaces, and many others across the globe. During these reports, it was noted that a possible cause for the disparity could be a better workplace culture with staff happiness at its core.

For any workplace, wellbeing is starting to be more of a priority, and managers are beginning to look for measures which track employee mental wellness and encourage a more positive working environment.

The future of app development

It’s clear that more and more people are responding positively to apps which encourage self-care and mental wellbeing. There is still a huge gap in the market for apps which help employers track the wellbeing of their staff and ensure that workplace happiness is maintained, and yet it’s clear that these would be a real benefit.
