Three Tips to Create User Engagement for Your App

Patrice Appleton • Sep 25, 2018

Planning and developing a great app is no small feat. It takes a vast amount of work to get an app to the point that it’s ready for rollout.

But then you face the tricky question of how to get people interested in what your app provides. It’s something many businesses and app developers struggle with, so don’t think you’re alone. Because this is such a pervasive, important issue, we’ve put together three tips that you can apply to your app to foster engagement and meet your goals.

Get Your Listing Right

The reason many apps arrive and then sink without a trace is that they simply aren’t positioned in the right way from the get-go. Many app store listings are either too short, overly long or don’t really tell the potential user why they need the app.

To write the perfect listing, you need to think about the real, applicable benefits your app offers. And, beyond that, the pain points it solves for the user. The app store listing isn’t about bedazzling people with features or technical insight – it should be all about the benefits. This is what people want to know, and it’s what you should provide.

How many times have you tried something for free, liked it and then purchased the full product? The same principle should apply to your app.

Instead of requiring users to log-in up-front, you should make it as easy as possible for them to see and explore the features of your app up front. Asking for things like social media log-in before they’re fully committed is a huge no-no, and it’s likely to turn more potential users away than it is to entice them. Users should have the ability to use the app in a browse-only mode, giving them insight into what the app does and how. And, when they want to dig deeper, this is when you move them towards log-in.

Give the User Incentives

One of the very best ways to build sustained engagement for an app is to give users real incentives to do so.

Rewards tied to the app service and function are a great way to do this. Think about things like access to exclusive content, promotions, rewards based on usage and more. Tying these types of perks to your app will help ensure that users see real value and, ultimately, build strong, long-lasting engagement.
